The indie girl’s guide to…Death Cab for Cutie and Youth Group @ the Enmore

Death Cab for Cutie + Youth Group
Enmore Theatre

Thursday, 26th February, 2009

It was such a pleasure to see Death Cab for Cutie return to our shores so soon after their last visit. With Australia being so far away from the rest of the world, it is not very often that an international band will visit twice on the back of the same album, usually its a visit every few years, but it’s only been six months since their last shows here. Ben Gibbard said during the show they love playing here, and with such a rapturous response from the crowd all night, you can clearly see why.

Sydney boys Youth Group started the proceedings tonight, and they were in fine form. They are about to embark on some dates in America, including a spot at SXSW. They actually supported Death Cab for Cutie on an American tour a few years ago, so it was nice to see them play here in their hometown with them.

It was a great set from YG, with lots of songs off their latest release The Night is Ours including Two Sides and All This Will Pass, plus my old faves Skeleton Jar and Shadowland.

This was my fourth time seeing Death Cab for Cutie live. The first time back in 2003 they supported Aussie band Something For Kate at the Metro. I have to admit at the time I had no idea who DCFC were, and I probably didn’t pay much attention during their set, as I was a massive S4K fan at the time. Boys I apologise for not paying much (if any) attention back then.

The second time was at Splendour in the Grass in 2006. They played the main stage and if I recall, first Youth Group played then The Grates then Death Cab, so I was in the same spot at the front barrier for about three hours, and it was there I met my lovely friend Sarah, as we bonded over our mutual love of YG and DCFC. And of course the third time was a mere six months ago at the Enmore.

The boys performance was “tight” (that’s for you Sarah!) and they played a great mix of songs from their various albums. They have a real energy on stage, and the crowd absolutely loved it. Personally I am always so happy to hear Soul Meets Body, The New Year, Title And Registration and The Sound of Settling…ba bahh. The build up to the vocals in I Will Possess Your Heart was another highlight, and the sing along encore to I Will Follow You Into The Dark made an appearance just as it did six months ago.
