The indie girl’s guide to…CSS @ the Metro

The Metro
Thursday, 5th March, 2009

You know you are always in for quite a show when CSS come to town. Words such as “crazy Brazilians” come to mind and in particular the word “Lovefoxxx” comes to mind, which I think roughly translates to – a pocket rocket of a frontwoman with a penchant for unitards.
I remember the first time I saw CSS or Cansei de Ser Sexy, which translates to “I’m tired of being sexy” (its something Beyonce was once quoted as saying) was at Falls Festival in Lorne in 2006. Back then I just wanted to check them out based on the blurb in the program and the things I had read about them in the press and online. They were enormous amounts of fun then, and they still are now.
The Metro was pretty slow to fill up last Thursday and we only got there at 10.30pm. But an hour later when CSS hit the stage the venue was nicely filled out but not overly crowded.
Being a littled bit Twilight-obsessed myself I was enormously happy when Lovefoxxx hit the stage in leggings, a leather jacket and an Edward Cullen t-shirt.
Edward Cullen is the male lead from the movie/book series Twilight, for those non-Twilight obsessives out there. In Lovefoxxx tradition she spent the night slowly peeling off her layers of clothing. First the jacket came off, then the shirt was pulled over her head, so no longer was Lovefoxx singing to us, but Edward was….bless. It really was a sight to behold. She kept getting the other band members to fix the shirt, and make sure it was covering her face exactly, pretty funny stuff.
Finally when the shirt came off the unitard was revealed.
CSS’s set was heavy with tracks from Donkey their sophomore album that was released last year, including Rat is Dead, Left Behind and Reggae All Night. Highlights from their self-titled debut included Alcohol, Alala, Music is My Hot Hot Sex and of course Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above, which featured in the encore.
A close up of the unitard during one of Lovefoxxx’s crowd surfing moments:
The encore involved getting audience members on stage to do their best model strut across the stage. I imagine this bit of the show goes better on some nights than others. Tonight was a bit awkward, with a bit of lame strutting up on stage. C’mon kids if you are going to volunteer to be on stage, you may as well give it your all!
Lovefoxxx gave it her all and needed a little rest at the end of the night….All in all fun times on a school night!
Thanks to Annie for all the fab photos!!!
