The indie girl’s guide to…The Kills @ the Forum

The Kills + Louis XIV

Oh my god, how cool is Alison Mosshart! Seriously rock n roll. Impressive.

The night opened with Louis XIV, who were well unimpressive. A bit naff, a bit plain,       a bit nothing really. Not for me.

What was for me though was the super talented PHDJ, who spinned us some tunes in between the bands. Possibly the best ‘spinner of tunes’ in our fair town, I was very in love with the Kings of Leon cover he played of King of the Rodeo (which I later googled and found to be The Bamboo’s featuring Megan Washington). This man knows his stuff.

Then without too much delay, The Kills graced the stage. They were infinitely better than they were at V Festival a few days earlier. Maybe it had something to do with not playing in the daytime (see note below). Although apparently it was still too bright for Alison, she requested that someone turn the lights down because she was feeling a bit fragile.

The majority of the set was off 2008′s Midnight Boom with a smattering of hits from their previous albums Keep On Your Mean Side and No Wow. The Kills are a unique outfit in today’s indie rock scene. The sound itself harks back to the heady days of rock n roll, and they do (on the outside at least) seem to live the rock n roll lifestyle – dating supermodels (Jamie + Kate Moss), smoking, drinking and partying (Alison, even alluding to the fact she thought she partied too hard yesterday and may need to throw up). Their greatest asset though is each other. Deliberately being a two-piece on stage (a drum machine being the honorary third member) they work off of each other, producing an intense on stage presence. The chemistry is evident, as they push each other around and sing in each other’s faces, before Alison stalks off around the stage. It was really captivating and I loved hearing Last Day of Magic, Tape Song and Hook and Line live.

Verdict: An awesome night of authentic rock n roll, drenched in attitude courtesy of Alison and Jamie.

Note

Alison really doesn’t like bright lights. This from The Kill’s blog:

previous stops include two days in sydney… which were… uh… a little difficult. i suppose 8 days straight of flights isn’t contributing to a solid state of mind… but we played our first v festival show and i found the sunlight to be rather damning and ill suited to my time on stage. luckily the shuttle buses to the hotel ran regularly. i hate the sun. have i ever told you? sure thing i have.

Hmmm…..secretly I think Alison’s aversion to the sunlight is due to her being a vampire…yes that’s right a vampire…and not a Twilight-era vampire (who can survive when its merely overcast) I mean old-school will melt-in-the-sun vampire.

And here’s my evidence to back it up. Enjoy x
