Monday night gigs…gotta love them! Early 7pm start too, which is quite nice for a change.
As much as I love support acts, I do enjoy these Sydney Festival gigs, where you get into the venue and its straight into the main act. So without any fuss or hoo-ha Laura Marling and band took to the stage. She has quite a delicate, porcelain look, which contrasts with her really strong singing voice. Laura was a pleasure to watch with a great stage manner as she and her band played lots of new songs from her forthcoming second album I Speak Because I Can, as well as faves like Ghosts from her debut Alas I Cannot Swim. Her in-between song banter and storytelling was a delight to hear too. She played a number of songs solo including a Neli Young cover. Her band included Marcus Mumford (of Mumford & Sons) on drums and accordion and more, as well as a ring-in from Sydney band Boy & Bear on bass. Laura plays at the Spiegeltent on Wednesday and Thursday too, but alas these shows are both sold-out.
